After graduating I initially went into finance, but started writing on the side when blogs became a thing. When the market went south in 2009, my job at a major bank was eliminated but opportunities to make a living writing about sports presented themselves. Over the course of the next 13 years I have written for and managed teams of writers for outlets including Bleacher Report, Choose Chicago (the re-branded name of the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau), La Vida Baseball, the Big Ten Network, Elite Sports New York, and others. I started my own Chicago Blackhawks blog in 2009 which I have recently shuttered in a move to become the lead Blackhawks writer for Bleacher Nation. I launched a media company that was a partnership with the National Baseball Hall of Fame (La Vida Baseball) and have had the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame as clients. I have also written two books about the Chicago Blackhawks.
As a senior I was able to cover the NFL Draft at the Indianapolis Colts' headquarters. My experience in radio and television helped prepare me for a multi-media career. My experience on the newspaper staff prepared me to hit deadlines and manage a staff of writers. My work with the radio station producing Taylor football game broadcasts helped me learn to prepare for game coverage.
My professors gave me the confidence to do anything I believe is possible. Their guidance was key to my growth as a media member.
Build a multi-discipline approach to media. Take advantage of the opportunities available on a small campus.
Never think something is impossible. And, if someone says no, ask what you need to do to make their answer a yes next time.
