Adjunct Instructor of Violin
Gert Kumi is a graduate of The Juilliard School where he studied violin performance and orchestral conducting. As a violinist, Mr. Kumi has performed across four continents and in more than 30 countries. Gert made his US solo debut in February 2006 at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts performing Ernest Chausson’s Concerto for Solo Violin, Piano and String Quartet. Mr. Kumi has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Vatican City, Sala Verdi of the Conservatory of Music in Milan, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and many others. Gert has played under the baton of many renowned conductors including Leonard Slatkin, John Williams, JoAnn Falletta, Jahja Ling, John Nelson, Otto-Werner Mueller, Itzhak Perlman, and Teddy Abrams.
After studying orchestral conducting with Virginia Allen at Juilliard, Gert studied and was mentored by numerous other conductors at workshops and symposiums. These include the Medomak Conducting Retreat with Kenneth Kiesler; the Michigan State University Conducting Symposium with Kevin Noe; the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Conducting Symposium with Enio Nicotra (student of the great Ilya Musin, and Andrew Constantine, Music Director of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. Mr. Kumi was also a conducting fellow at the Juilliard Conducting Symposium for music educators where he studied with JoAnn Falletta. Gert made his conducting debut with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in February 2015 where he conducted Symphony no. 4 by Johaness Brahms in concert. He has also conducted Symphony of the Lakes in Indiana, Michigan State University Orchestra, the Anderson University Symphony Orchestra and Taylor University Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Kumi has also served as cover conductor for the InterHarmony International Music Festival Orchestra in Acqui Terme, Italy and the Yellow River Symphony Orchestra in Zhengzhou, China.
In 2011, Mr. Kumi was appointed Assistant Professor of Music at Anderson University and Conductor of the Anderson University Orchestra, where he built the orchestra program to the same level as that of the other major ensembles in the school of Music, Theater and Dance. As an orchestral musician, Gert has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony, the Louisville Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Indiana, Carmel Symphony and Anderson Symphony. He also served as concertmaster and cover conductor for the Symphony of the Lakes from 2007-2010. As an educator, Mr. Kumi has taught at Nyack College in New York, Grace College and Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, and more recently, Taylor University in Upland, Indiana where he teaches violin and viola.
