Taylor Remembers Beloved Staff Member Sue Gavin

Susan (Sue) Diane Gavin, 60, Marion, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Marion General Hospital.

She worked as the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs at Taylor University for 11 years. She enjoyed working with students and faculty at Taylor University and helped develop opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in specialized research projects through the university. Susan had a passion for furthering education and mentoring students in pursuing their goals. She led yearly, summer research projects through Taylor University with a servant heart and was always excited for the students involved with the program.

"Sue was a bright light of encouragement for faculty, staff, and students as she led the Office of Sponsored Programs. Her dedication to Christ-centered scholarship enhanced Taylor’s academic mission over the past eleven years," said Dr. Michael Hammond, Taylor's Provost.

Gavin had many ties with the Grant County and Marion communities. She was actively involved in efforts to help serve the local community, which she held close to her heart. She is loved and respected by many. Her passions not only extended to the local and university communities, but she also loved trying new baking recipes to share with family and friends.

She graduated from New Providence High School, York College, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Azusa Pacific University, where she received her doctoral degree in Higher Education.

Survivors include her husband, John; two sons, John H. (Meghan) Gavin, IV, of Wyoming, MI, and Thomas Gavin stationed at Fort Hood, TX; daughter, Sharon (Chris) McKay of Middletown, NY; brother, Rich (Robyn) Fitter of Sparta, NJ; and two grandchildren, Riley McKay and Liam McKay.

Gavin was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Fitter.

Memorial contributions may be made payable to Taylor University, 236 W. Reade Ave., Upland, IN 46989, in memory of Susan Gavin, to assist students in undergraduate research.
