The award-winning documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound will screen on March 5 at 7 pm, in the Boren Campus Center’s Cornwall Auditorium as the kickoff event of Taylor’s Envision Film Festival, March 5-7, 2020. The film was edited by Taylor graduate David J. Turner and premiered at the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival in France. Free film workshops, screenings and an awards presentation for Taylor student filmmakers will highlight the remainder of the festival.
Turner, who will be a guest at Envision this year, has been recognized by both the American Cinema Editors (ACE) and the Cinema Audio Society for his sound design on the film. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and also worked as a sound editor on the Sundance-winning Fruitvale Station, the directorial debut of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.
Timothy Sutherland, a cinematographer and Taylor alumnus, will also be on campus for Envision. Sutherland has enjoyed a career as a film and television camera operator, working on the NBC legal drama Harry’s Law starring Kathy Bates, and on the medical drama Monday Mornings starring Alfred Molina. He also worked on the ABC show, Nashville, from 2013-2018.
High school students and interested community members are welcome to attend the screening of Making Waves or any of the free film workshops offered from 9 am–5 pm, March 6. Registration is required at www.envisionfilmfestival.com.
Several fiction and documentary films made by Taylor students will be shown in Rediger Auditorium at 7 pm, March 6. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.00. After the films, an awards ceremony will recognize the best in Taylor student filmmaking and showcase the winner of this year’s high school film competition.
Taylor’s Film and Media Arts program has won more than 350 external awards, including CINEs, Tellys and multiple Crystal Pillars from the regional Emmy organization. The Envision Film Festival is hosted by Taylor’s Film and Media Arts program and Taylor’s Center for Faith, Film and Media.
