Taylor University students, in partnership with local health organizations, will host two events to promote opportunities for healthy living in Hartford City on April 30.
The first of these events is a Live Well open house taking place at the Hartford City location of the Invitation Program, located on the courthouse square, from 11 am-1 pm. The open house will feature door prizes, healthy food samples, free health screenings, and take-home recipes. Also provided will be opportunities to learn about diabetes prevention, natural movement, and living well.
Immediately following, students will host a 3k walk, which will be held at the Blackford High School Greenway Trail. The course starts at Needler’s Supermarket at 1 pm, and continues until 3 pm. Vendors from local businesses providing samples and information will be present. Each participant will collect raffle tickets that will enter them to win door prizes and gift cards from businesses in the Hartford City area.
“We hope these two events will be opportunities for Hartford City residents to experience the easy, fun, and delicious reality of not just living healthy, but also living well,” said Taylor student Claire Nieshalla.
These events are being put on by the Live Well group, a service-learning Public Relations class at Taylor University. This group of 15 students is led by Dr. Donna Downs with the goal of working with community partners for students to learn as they serve and serve as they learn. “It’s exciting to work with a community as dedicated as Hartford City is,” Downs said. “Those we’re working with are welcoming and care well for their citizens.”
The students are working in partnership with IU Health Blackford, the Purdue Extension, and the Invitation Program. These organizations bring qualified and professional insight to the events, as well as an understanding of what it means to be a part of the Hartford City community.
