Taylor Student Newspaper Receives 24 Awards at ICPA Contest

Taylor University’s student newspaper The Echo won 24 awards, including a 3rd place award for Division 3 Newspaper of the Year statewide, in the spring 2023 Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) contest. 

Besides Taylor, ICPA’s Division 3 includes Anderson University’s The Andersonian, Bethel University’s Beacon, Goshen College’s The Record, Manchester College’s The Oak Leave, and Wabash College’s The Bachelor.

The Echo is led this year by Multimedia Journalism senior Markus Miller and junior Kay Rideout as co-editors-in-chief, who both earned 2nd place awards this year for their work In addition, Multimedia Journalism and Public Relations major Marissa Muljat received 1st and 3rd place for newspaper feature page design and 2nd place for feature story.

“I think it's encouraging to see our paper winning awards in external spaces,” Rideout said. “It affirms that this is a real newspaper.”

Dr. Alan Blanchard, associate professor of Multimedia Journalism, expressed his enthusiasm as faculty advisor for the newspaper.

The Echo team’s recognition at this statewide level is well-deserved,” he said. “The student journalists work very hard to create compelling, interesting stories for students, staff, and faculty. The Taylor community benefits from their creative skills that include writing, editing, photography, and graphic design.”

Since 1913, Taylor’s weekly student newspaper has provided breaking news coverage, creating an interactive space where students are the voice. At The Echo, students participate in award-winning journalism as they gain professional experience through volunteer or paid positions. Students can contribute news articles, work as section editors, take photos, or manage web and social media content.
