Through the Pulliam Journalism Center at Taylor University, more Christian journalists and writers are being equipped to speak God’s truths in the media industry. The Center fosters the discipling, mentoring, teaching, and training of Christian journalism students who have committed their story-writing talents to the glory of God.
For students majoring in Multimedia Journalism who are interested in culture-influencing industries like broadcast, online, and print journalism, the Center prepares student leaders to make a Christ-focused impact in the workplace.
The Center is named in honor of the multiple generations of servant-leaders in the Pulliam family. Many members of the family, including Russell B. Pulliam, served as journalists at the Pulliam family-owned Indianapolis Star and/or at other newspapers.
Pulliam’s motivation for lending his family’s name to the Pulliam Journalism Center lay in his passion for the training of godly journalism students. “I am asking the Lord for a new generation of news reporters to bring the wisdom of the Bible to reporting of the news, along with the commentary,” he said.
The Pulliam Journalism Center is housed in the Rupp Communication Arts Building. Founded in 2019 at Taylor University, the Center’s main initiatives are to provide scholarships and train journalism students in their faith and the craft of storytelling.
The Center provides focused discussion of the intersection of faith with media and society, demonstrating Taylor’s integration of faith and culture by bringing media professionals and students together in classes and conferences.
“We need Christians to work in broadcast, online, Christian, and print media industries as salt-and-light, truth-telling journalists,” said Dr. Alan Blanchard, associate professor of Journalism. “There is a need for discernment, kindness, fairness, objectivity, truth, compassion, and engagement in today’s broadcast, online, and print media by Christians. The Pulliam Journalism Center hopes and prays to be a catalyst for calling young people to service as journalists seeking and reporting in a way that honors both truth-telling and God.”
The Pulliam Journalism Center funds $120,000 in scholarships each year to students majoring in Multimedia Journalism. See here to apply for journalism scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year. The deadline to apply for the scholarship awards is March 15, 2024.
“I am grateful for the support provided by the Pulliam family,” Taylor University President Michael Lindsay said. “They have been role models for aspiring journalists in Indiana for a long time, and we are honored to have their investment in the next generation of news reporters at Taylor.”
