Delivering papers was one thing, getting on the front page was quite another. Based on the newsboy strike of 1899, Disney’s Newsies is breaking onto the Taylor Theatre stage to close out the 2023-2024 season.
Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies is the inspiring tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise paper costs at the newsies' expense, Jack rallies them to fight against the big guys, their unfair working conditions, and justice.
Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning musical score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” the play is packed with nonstop thrills and a timeless message of hope and integrity that are perfect for the whole family.
Director Tracy Manning said the energy of this cast is contagious and radiates off the stage. “The choreography by Kory Browder, the music led by Dr. Conor Angell is fun for the whole family, and the set, designed by designer Conner Reagan, is dynamic and uses Mitchell Theatre to its fullest.”
“Disney’s Newsies” is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). MTI also supplies all authorized performance materials.
