Taylor University’s Lyric Theatre is excited to present Working: A Musical, based on the best-selling 1974 book by Studs Terkel. The production runs from January 24-26, 2025, at the Butz-Carruth Recital Hall in the Smith Hermanson Music Building at Taylor University. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on January 24 and 25, with a 2 pm matinee on January 26.
This vibrant production explores the lives of everyday American workers and celebrates their unique stories, struggles, and triumphs through powerful songs and dynamic performances. It
features an ensemble cast of 16 talented Taylor University students with roles that span a wide range of professions—from office workers to factory laborers. Together, they bring the diverse experiences of the American worker to life.
Director and Co-Chair of the Music, Theatre, & Dance Department Dr. Conor Angell explains, “This production gives voice to the unsung heroes of our society, the workers whose contributions are often overlooked. Through music and storytelling, we explore the emotional depth of work and its impact on our identities.”
The production features songs by acclaimed composers, including Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights), and James Taylor, among others.
“I think people will really enjoy it and gain a greater appreciation for different jobs, apart from their stereotypes,” said Lisa Pinsenschaum, a freshman Musical Theatre major who is in the production.
The ensemble cast features standout performances from students including Ris Bland (The Madwoman of Chaillot), Josiah Friesen (Newsies), and Grace Bradshaw (The Spitfire Grill). The production also features choreography by sophomore dance student Ella Curry and alumna Susannah Quinn. The set design by Conner Reagan, lighting by Emma Reagan, and costumes by Grace Crews create an immersive world that captures the variety of work environments, from bustling office cubicles to gritty factory floors.
