Taylor Partners with Washington University’s #1 Ranked Physical Therapy Doctorate Program

Taylor University has recently secured an articulation agreement with Washington University in St. Louis’ Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Consistently ranked #1 in the nation, Washington University’s program is renowned for its outstanding classroom and clinical training. The agreement states that each year, Washington University will hold two seats for Taylor University Exercise Science, Biology, or Human Physiology and Preventative Medicine graduates, provided they meet eligibility criteria.

According to Dr. Matthew Renfrow, Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences at Taylor University, Taylor has a tradition of articulation agreements with graduate programs in health science fields such as Occupational Therapy, Athletic Training, and Pharmacy. Typically, these agreements ensure interviews for exceptional students. In contrast, Washington University has made a remarkable commitment to hold positions for Taylor students in their nationally ranked doctorate program. This rare opportunity underscores the value of Taylor students in healthcare fields, affirmed by reputable institutions.

Renfrow reflected, “It speaks volumes of the quality of faculty in the sciences as well as our foundational core that are preparing these people for a variety of healthcare-oriented fields.”

The articulation agreement formalizes a pattern of Taylor students’ application and acceptance into Washington University’s program over the years. In fact, year after year, 100% of Taylor’s Exercise Science graduates have been accepted to Physical Therapy programs across the country. Usually, at least one of these Taylor alumni attends Washington University’s program, while several more are accepted.

Dr. Steven Ambler, Director of Education at Washington University, attested to the character and preparation of Taylor graduates in his program. He described them as showcasing “leadership skills" and a “strong commitment to lifelong learning...continuously seeking ways to enhance their knowledge and expertise.” Washington University logo

Invaluable Hands-On Experience

Renfrow shared that both classroom-based instruction and extracurricular opportunities make Taylor students well rounded and attractive to graduate programs. In particular, The Invitation Program, a diabetes prevention clinic near campus, provides hands-on experience for students. The Invitation Program partners with doctors from the Indiana University Health network and is managed by an interdisciplinary team of Taylor University faculty. Students are trained as health educators and work alongside clients to implement healthy eating and exercise plans. It’s rare for undergraduate students to have direct experience with patients, and this opportunity provides invaluable field-based learning for Taylor students.

Students “are not just being prepared in a classroom or by a book to learn how to do medical procedures. They’re actually working with human beings—hands on, motivational counseling—in their first couple years at Taylor,” Renfrow explained. The Invitation Program is just one of many opportunities for students to gain experiential learning outside of the classroom.

Health Sciences: Taylor’s History and Future

Renfrow is optimistic when considering the future of pre-health science areas at Taylor. In fact, he is currently working on another articulation agreement with the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Marian University in Indianapolis. Additionally, Taylor University’s graduate-level physician assistant program is underway, with its first cohort beginning in fall of 2025. Further, the first cohort of Taylor’s nursing program began classes this January.

Human health and human flourishing have been part of Taylor’s DNA from its beginning years. In the 1890s, Taylor was a part of the Fort Wayne College of Medicine, which later merged into the Indiana School of Medicine. For Renfrow, seeing the university expand further into health science fields is a true joy to be a part of.

For Christian students pursuing healthcare professions, Taylor University is the place to gain technical and experiential knowledge, which will prepare them to serve a world in need.
