Medical Laborary Science (Major)

Medical Laboratory Science is the study and practice of laboratory diagnostic tests needed to detect, monitor, and treat illness and health conditions.

Medical laboratory scientists are in high demand as healthcare professionals who analyze, evaluate and validate laboratory data in the five major areas of the clinical laboratory: chemistry, immunology, hematology, transfusion medicine, and microbiology. No postgraduate degree is necessary for a successful career directly after graduation.

Taylor’s Medical Laboratory Science program is a 3+1 program, with three years on Taylor’s campus in Upland, Indiana, and one year under the Indiana University Health program. During your three years at Taylor, you’ll take the prerequisite courses you need, guided by knowledgeable faculty. Then, you’ll apply to the IU Medical Laboratory Science Program (certain academic criteria must be met).

During your fourth year, you’ll be placed at a hospital, generally in either Indianapolis or Muncie. Over the course of two semesters and J-term, you'll rotate throughout the hospital, gaining practical training in all aspects of medical laboratory science. At the end of four years, you’ll be licensed through IU Health, as well as having earned a high-quality Christian liberal arts degree from Taylor University.

Your Path to a Licensed Medical Lab Scientist

Medical lab scientists are in high demand, as the healthcare industry faces a worker shortage. This program leads to a high-paying job–no advanced degree needed, and at no further cost to you: you just pay Taylor tuition. You’ll have experience working the equivalent of a full-time job at IU hospitals, so you’ll be well-prepared for a successful career right out of college.
