English Education (Major)

An English Education degree combines your passion for reading and writing with your heart for teaching.

Share your love of writing and literary passion by teaching middle school or high school. Dive deep into classical and contemporary works of American, British, and world writers and thinkers. You will hone your creative and analytical writing skills, learn different approaches to literary criticism, and develop an understanding of grammar and composition.

You’ll also take courses to prepare you for running a classroom. Education courses provide practical training in educational psychology, classroom management and discipline, and assessment methods for middle and high school classrooms. You will also be trained in varied approaches to teaching English and engaging secondary education students in English literature and creative writing. All English Education majors complete a semester of full-time student teaching during their senior year.

  • Launching into Your Classroom

Education majors spend a full semester of their senior year teaching students locally or internationally. Each Education student teaches at two different schools, preparing you to manage your own classroom after graduation.
  • Literary London January Trip

This study tour, offered during January term, allows students to study the works of major British authors and also to visit the homes and locations that inspired their literature. In the past, authors have included Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens, Samuel Johnson, Shakespeare, and others. Most of the trip is centered in London, with trips to Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Edinburgh, and other locations enriching the experience.
  • On-Campus Teaching & Tutoring Opportunities

Through employment with the Writing Center in the Academic Enrichment Center, students with distinct strengths in writing can tutor classmates in research paper development, outlining, and editing.

Interested in working with kids? Get involved with WORDshop!, an on-campus summer writing camp for area youth designed and taught by English majors, who have the opportunity to learn how to build a writing community, encourage young writers, and design curriculum for a camp.
