Philosophy (Major/Minor)

We are primed to ask big questions—the philosophical questions about God, the meaning of life, morality, and politics. God "set eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

If you love thinking about what really matters, major in Philosophy. When the Wall Street Journal broke down median mid-career earnings by undergraduate major, Philosophy outperformed almost all other majors. Philosophy graduates also excel on standardized tests for graduate studies in law, business, medicine, and many other fields.

The skills Philosophy develops—rigorous thinking, insightful discussion, understanding and evaluating divergent perspectives on difficult issues, and incisive writing—are in high demand. If you love the big questions and want an attractive career, Philosophy fits you.

Career Preparation and Flexibility

The Philosophy major only requires 31 credit hours, so you have flexibility to double-major, explore courses you love, or focus on pre-professional preparation for law, business, or medical school. Along the way, you’ll connect with Taylor’s extensive alumni network, try job shadowing, and pursue internships.

Discipleship and Academics

Each of Taylor’s Philosophy professors has a seminary degree from an orthodox, biblically-grounded seminary on top of our Philosophy PhDs. We want you to graduate from Taylor as a committed, well-informed follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. That makes our approach unique, even among Christian universities.

We never shy away from engaging philosophical work from different perspectives, but always help students sift those discussions in light of the authoritative Word of God and a vibrant discipleship-oriented community.

You’ll never be a number at Taylor. At many schools, it’s hard to connect with your professors—much less spend time at their homes. It’s different here. We have a freshman Faith & Philosophy class that meets at each professor’s home. There’s an annual cookout, a Christmas party, and a yearly Philosophy Retreat. And don’t forget our nationally recognized Student Development program. Our students also have opportunities to work on faculty-led research projects and take international trips led by Philosophy professors.

Chase the Big Questions in the Light of Christ

Philosophy professor Dr. Kevin Diller explains what studying philosophy at Taylor looks like.

Being a Taylor student in Spain and Ecuador forced me to use the material I learned in class every day, to see and experience God in new ways, and to craft meaningful relationships with the people around me.
