Art Education (Major)

Develop your ability to teach art to grades K-12, inspiring students to love and appreciate the arts through art history, fundamentals, and creative practice.

Art educators provide students with the tools to clearly express visual ideas and concepts. Christian art educators are also responsible for developing students’ creative potential for the glory of God’s kingdom.

As an Art Education major, your time is split between art classes in the Modelle Metcalf Visual Arts Center and education courses in the lower level of Euler Science Complex. You will take studio art classes exploring different mediums to hone your artistic skills while learning and practicing teaching skills. Three core art education courses equip future art teachers to integrate learning education and studio classes to develop meaningful and effective art programs.

Classroom experience starts freshman year! Field experiences in local schools will give you the opportunity to observe art teachers integrate theoretical approaches. You also receive hands-on experience by student-teaching at two different placements, and an opportunity to show your mastery of art with a senior thesis exhibition during your senior year.

  • Launching into Your Classroom

Art Education majors are in the classroom from year one! You’ll observe and teach throughout your training, ensuring content from the classroom is transferring well. Art education students student-teach at two different levels and either in a local, urban or international setting.
  • Art as Service

Community art service is required for Art Education majors and offers you a chance to use your artistic skills to give back to the local community. Service experiences involve teaching art lessons to at-risk students, working with local school programs, providing art activities for various school functions, and painting murals on various buildings in downtown Upland. Art Education majors are involved in several community programs, including homeschool art lessons and private art lessons with children in Grant County.
